Yakama Tribe Bars Dairy Expansion On Reservation
TOPPENISH, Wash. (AP) — Yakama tribal leaders have barred new dairies or feedlots within the reservation.
The move comes after complaints from a group of residents concerned about the environmental effects of a proposed dairy expansion.
Despite last week’s decision, the Yakima Herald-Republic reports a Sunnyside family still hopes to persuade tribal leaders to allow a dairy with 7,000 cows on 480 acres south of Harrah.
An agronomist helping with the project, Stuart Turner, says it would include state-of-the-art technology to protect the environment.
