WSU’s Cameron Ward named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list
PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State quarterback Cameron Ward was named to the 2022 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list on Tuesday.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell — integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: was born in Texas, graduated from a Texas High School, played at a Texas-based junior college or currently playing at Texas DI four-year college.
Ward, one of 63 players named to the list, is the first Cougar to be named to the watch list.
Ward transferred to WSU this past January after two record-setting seasons at Incarnate Word in Texas. The sophomore from West Columbia, Texas won the Jerry Rice Award following the 2020 season, the award given to the most outstanding freshman player in FCS football.
Ward set UIW single-season records with 2,260 yards and 24 touchdowns in just six games. Last season at UIW, Ward was named an FCS second-team All-American, the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year and Walter Payton Award Finalist after leading UIW to a 10-3 record with school records of 4,648 passing yards, 47 touchdown passes and 357.5 passing yards-per-game. Ward was also recently named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, given to the most outstanding player in college football.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose award will be narrowed down to 16 semifinalists in November and then up to 5 finalists in December. A winner is selected on January 11.
