WSP troopers targeting drivers with unsecured loads
SPOKANE, Wash. — Maybe it’s yard waste, or maybe you’ve been doing some spring cleaning. If you’re taking your junk to the dump — make sure it actually gets there.
“I guess the most obvious is if you’re losing debris and we’re seeing stuff flying out the back of your truck, that’s an issue,” said Trooper Kyle Witt.
Through the middle of May, troopers across the state are doing emphasis patrols making sure every load is safe and secure.
According to WSP, an estimated 100 people are killed around the country each year from unsecured loads. Troopers contact an average of 6,400 drivers each year for the same hazard. More than 800 crashes in Washington were caused by unsecured loads in the last five years – 80 resulted in injuries and two people died.
Penalties range from $228 to criminal charges.
“You don’t want to be that person who hurts someone out here,” Witt said.
