Wood stove causes Hillyard house fire

SPOKANE, Wash. — An improperly installed wood stove caused a house fire in the 1600 block of E. Walton Avenue Friday morning.

Around 10:50 a.m., the Spokane Fire Department responded to a report of a possible chimney fire. Crews found smoke and fire coming from a chimney chase on the outside of the residence.

Crews confirmed the home had been evacuated and extinguished the fire, which was contained to the outside of the home.

Spokane Fire Department’s Special Investigation Unit determined the cause of the fire to be an improperly maintained wood burning stove.

The Spokane Fire Department is reminding everyone of the importance of having heating appliances properly maintained and regularly inspected by licensed professionals.
