Woman arrested for leading ISP and SCSO deputies on pursuit across state lines
SPOKANE, Wash. — Deputies arrested a woman Friday night for intentionally trying to collide her vehicle with two police cars, then leading ISP and SCSO deputies on a pursuit that started in Kootenai County and ended across state lines.
ISP Troopers pursued 53-year-old Colleen Burgess on Hwy 290 to Spokane County, where SCSO deputies picked up the chase on N. Argonne near Bigelow Gulch.
Burgess’ vehicle was finally stopped when deputies deployed spike strips near Bruce and Peone. With the car stopped, Burgess sat inside, refusing to leave, for five minutes, while music played loudly on the car’s stereo. She seemed to be exhibiting signs of mental illness, a report by the Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies finally administered pepper spray through the open driver’s window, at which point Burgess put up a struggle and refused to leave the car. Deputies then used a taser to take her into custody without further incident.
Burgess was cleared at a hospital before being booked into the Spokane County Jail for attempting to elude a police vehicle and resisting arrest.
She is expected to be charged with aggravated assault on law enforcement and attempting to elude law enforcement.
