Will Eastern Washington give the Huskies another close game?
SEATTLE, Wash. — If the 2011 and 2014 meetings between the Eagles and Huskies are any indication of what we might see on Saturday, it’s going to go down to the wire in Montlake.
The 2011 EWU team was the most talent-loaded we’ve ever seen in Cheney, but they fell short by just three points in Seattle, 30-27.
Then, 2014, in Chris Petersen’s first home game as head coach of the Huskies, the Eags came back from a 21-0 deficit in the first quarter, to eventually fall 59-52 behind seven touchdown passes from Vernon Adams Jr.
The Dawgs lost eight starters on defense to graduation or the NFL draft, but they have never struggled to recruit talent under Jimmy Lake.
The Eagles have a strong quarterback in Eric Barriere and a lot of experience protecting him on the offensive line, but UW is bigger at almost every position on the defensive line.
Coach Petersen addressed Esatern’s success last year in making it to the FCS National Championship, and knows their history of success, saying this is not an “ideal opener” for the 13th-ranked Huskies.
Season openers can be unpredictable, but both teams have a lot of respect for the other, expect a good game Saturday at noon.
