Whitworth University introducing brewing program this fall

SPOKANE, Wash. — Whitworth University is introducing a Brewing Science & Operations Certificate program this fall.

The program is for adult students and other community members who have interest in craft brewing and want to start their own brewing service.

Students will be studying topics involving the science, business and culture behind brewing. They will be using professional equipment similar to what would be used in brewing settings.

Students will take four courses along with completing an internship at a local brewery. Courses include Introduction to Brewing, Intermediate Brewing, Business & Marketing of Brewing, and Advanced Brewing.

“Spokane is the perfect place for a brewing education program based in fermentation science and hands-on experience with professional brewing equipment,” says Professor of Biology Aaron Putzke, the Brewing Science & Operations program director. “We are tapping into the deep well of knowledge with local craft brewers that will give students rich experiences during the internship portion of the program. Overall, our goal is to support and be a resource for the outstanding craft brewing community in our region by creating a talent pool of well-trained individuals who can hit the ground running whether plugging into an existing brewery or setting out on their own.”

Students do not need prior experience or prerequisites to take the course.

Class sizes will have limits for students so they can spend more time with instructors. Applicants must meet admission and age requirements from the School of Continuing Studies.

Applications close on August 1. They are taking applications now.
