What to expect if you’re heading to the Hiawatha Trail or Silver Mt. this Memorial Day Weekend

Silver Mountain Resort opens for Memorial Day Weekend

AVERY, Idaho — Whether it’s skiing or mountain biking, there’s something for everyone to do this Memorial Day weekend.

Silver Mountain is reopening to skiers and snowboarders for this weekend only.

“In the ski business, you tend to rely on mother nature quite a bit so Mother Nature decided we weren’t quite ready to be done with skiing, so here we are,” said Gus Colburn, Marketing Coordinator for Silver.

Normally, Memorial Day weekend kicks off their mountain bike season.

“Our base right now is actually four feet, which is crazy for this time of year, so we’re very excited to be open this weekend,” he said.

Prices are discounted. Tickets will be $49 for adults and $43 for children. Anyone with a 2021-2022 season pass, summer season pass, or a 2022-2023 season pass can get in for free.

“It’s definitely going to be spring skiing conditions, so don’t come out here expecting like a huge powder day, like a mid-January day,” Colburn said. “It’s definitely going to be a good vibe, some wet snow, but you know, skiing in May you can’t beat it.”

For those that want to mountain bike, the Route of the Hiawatha opens Friday.

“There’s still plenty of snow here, you’ll have snow-covered peaks up on the side,” said Matthew Sawyer, Director of Marketing for the Route of the Hiawatha. “You’ll have roaring waterfalls on the other side of this St. Paul path tunnel.”

The 15-mile trail is open from 8:30 am to 4:15 pm, seven days a week.

“Last year we had a 3-year-old on a Stryder bike, with little tiny wheels make the whole trail,” he said. “It did take him about three bags of gummy bears, but he made it.”

Reservations are recommended in advance.

“Probably a higher likelihood of seeing wildlife, and the trail will be a little softer, and a little wetter,” Sawyer said.

The Route of the Hiawatha is celebrating its 25th anniversary. This year, they’re offering four full-moon rides from 8 pm-11 pm.
