What to bring before you make a road trip this winter

SPOKANE, Wash. — Making a long road trip around this time of year can be treacherous, but there’s a few things you can bring to make it easier, just in case.

The Washington State Department of Transportation made a winter driving supply checklist for items you may need in an unexpected event, like an accident or pass closure.

Here’s what you should have in your trunk:

  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries
  • Blanket
  • Non-perishable food/batteries
  • Water
  • Gloves
  • Cell phone charger/battery booster
  • Tire chains
  • Ice scraper
  • Jumper cables
  • Flares/warning triangle
  • Sand/kitty litter for traction

If you keep these things handy and you get stuck, you’ll be thankful you have them.

Currently, Snoqualmie, Stevens, and Blewett Pass are all open. You can get the latest updates on pass conditions here.
