WA Legislature passes measure to end surprise medical billing

The Washington Legislature voted on Thursday in favor of ending surprise medical billing.

The vote came after the Senate unanimously passed the measure last week.

Also referred to as balanced billing, surprise billing is when patients receive a bill for the difference between what a provider expects to be reimbursed from an insurer, versus what the insurer expects them to pay.

The bill will remove patients from billing disputes between health insurers and doctors. It will also protect patients from balanced billing for non emergency surgical or ancillary services at an in-network facility, provided that those services are issued by an out-of-network provider.
