WA House Approves Gregoire Climate Blueprint

OLYMPIA (AP) — The state House has approved Gov. Chris Gregoire’s plan to set greenhouse gas limits for Washington state businesses.

Under the bill, large industrial businesses and trucking fleets will have to report their greenhouse gas emissions to the state Ecology Department.

The department is required to come up with a plan that reduces greenhouse gas emissions statewide. The ultimate goal is to cut emissions to half of 1990 levels, by 2050.

The bill approved Tuesday night also sets up the goal of creating 25,000 “green collar” jobs in the state. And it gets the state on the road to helping develop a western region cap-and-trade market for greenhouse gases.
