‘Very High’ UV Index for Hoopfest Weekend

SPOKANE, Wash.– Hoopfest weekend is here and the weather is incredible! After a chilly and wet spring season that only turned over to summer in the past week, this weekend may be a bit of a shock to your system. That includes the risk of sunburn.

The UV Index is expected to be around 8 this weekend. 8 is considered “very high” and sunburns can happen in as little as 15 to 20 minutes. The UV Index ranges from 1 to 11 and is meant to put a number on your risk of sunburn.

During High, Very High, or Extreme UV Index days a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 is recommended by the EPA, but SPF 30 or higher is a better choice.

In addition to the high UV, temperatures will run the risk of being a little scorching on the Hoopfest courts. Lots of concrete and asphalt in downtown Spokane could push temperatures close to 90 in those few dozen blocks around center court on Sunday.
