Vandals Fire Men’s Basketball Coach

MOSCOW, ID — The University of Idaho has asked men’s basketball head coach George Pfeifer not to return next year following a season were the Vandals went 8-21.

“George improved the competitiveness of the program and I commend him for his effort,” director of athletics Rob Spear said in a release posted on the UI athletics website
. “However, in evaluating all aspects of the program and its future, the timing is right to make a change.”

Pfeifer went 12-48 in two seasons with the Vandals, managing just four wins in his first year, but doubling the total to eight wins in the season that just ended. That was good enough for UI to finish seventh in the nine team Western Athletic Conference.

Pfeifer had one year left on a three year contract.

The university statement says “A seach for [Pfeifer’s] replacement is underway.”
