US Mil: Soldier Killed By Roadside Bomb

BAGHDAD — The U.S. military says an American soldier has been killed by an armor-piercing bomb south of Baghdad.

A statement says the soldier died Monday when a explosively formed projectile went off near the Shiite holy city of Karbala.

U.S. officials believe the projectiles, known as EFPs, are manufactured in Iran and shipped to Shiite militants, a charge Tehran denies.

At least 4,272 members of the U.S. military have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
