University of Washington among three sites to test male contraceptive gel
Six international sites, including the University of Washington School of Medicine, are enrolling couples in the first clinical trial of efficacy of a male contraceptive gel.
According to UW Medicine, 400 couples will be used in the study to determine if a daily application of gel to the male partner’s shoulders can prevent pregnancy for one year.
“The potential of this new gel is huge,” said William Bremner, UW professor of medicine. “There is a misperception that men are not interested in, or are even afraid of, tools to control their own fertility. We know that’s not the case.”
Bremner and Stephanie Page, also a UW professor of medicine, will lead the trial in Seattle. They are working with the Population Council, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute.
