Theft of fishing gear leads to high-speed chase, van fire
PORT ORCHARD, Wash. — The theft of thousands of dollars worth of fishing gear led to a high-speed chase through Port Orchard and ended when the get-away van burst into flames.
The Kitsap Sun reports that Charter boat operator Randy Jones went to his storage unit on Sunday and saw a man closing its door.
Jones confronted the man but he fled in a van so he chased after them. He says he’d been collecting the gear for 15 years and wasn’t going to let it go.
The police took over and a suspect in the van began throwing fishing gear out the window.
When the van’s tire hit a curb, it deflated. Sparks caused the van to burst into flames. The suspects ran but were caught and booked on burglary charges.
Jones estimates his loses of up to $10,000.
