The Doomsday Heist: GTA Online gets massive new expansion

Since its debut in 2013, Grand Theft Auto 5 has unveiled many expansions and changes over the years, but none as massive as the new Doomsday Heist that launched Tuesday. Overall IGN reports the update amounts to 12 hours of added gameplay.
The expansion takes place over “3 sprawling acts” and promises “the awards are mouth-watering and a massive adrenaline spike is absolutely guaranteed,” according to the official Rockstar Newswire article.
In the scenario Billionaire entrepreneur Avon Hertz has been working on “a plan so diabolical it could end life as we know it” and unlike other expansions requires some serious teamwork as players are required to form a squad between 2-4 players to combat the menace.
“The Doomsday Heist involves negotiating multiple ruthless Freemode prep missions, tactical setup operations, and experimental weapons and vehicles – each ending with an over-the-top finale that brings a payoff big enough to share with your fellow crew members,” said Rockstar.
In order to aid the online warriors in their quest Rockstar has added some spectacular new high-tech gear, a new radio station complete with an all new playlist, new vehicles and customizations, as well as a wide range of achievements and trophies.
In order to activate the added content players are required to purchase one of the ‘IAA Facilities’ and become the CEO of the new organization. This facility grants access to a high-tech planning room used to map out and launch the new missions. PC Gamer reports one such facility and the required amenities to get started costs around $2 million of in-game money; a $1.25 million “shark card” costs $20.
On top of that The Doomsday Heist also brings some pretty futuristic weaponry such as the Khanjali tank and the long sought after Mammoth Thruster personal jetpack. You can also fit your compound with, “Your very own Strike Team on call, or an Orbital Cannon capable of immolating any patch of ground that incurs your wrath” the Newswire announcement states.
However the cost of each of these new tech options and enhancements can add up quickly and the folks over on the GTA Online subreddit have a handy breakdown of the costs associated.
Earlier this year Publisher Take-Two revealed that GTA V has sold over 85 million copies, making it a massively popular game to date. While there has not been any substantial updates to the single player version of the game they have been cultivating and growing the online portion of the game since the beginning.
Time will tell what 2018 holds for the future of GTA Online but with with Rockstars’ newest game; Red Dead Redemption 2 slated to come out early next year, some are left wondering if this will be the last major update to this now 4 year old title.
