Technology helps SPD recover stolen property
SPOKANE, Wash. — A search warrant filed on Tuesday said Spokane Police responded to a “string of residential burglaries” in the Gonzaga University area.
But the warrant only details one address where two people reported belongings stolen. KXLY reached out to SPD to ask whether there were more theft victims, but has not heard back.
Both theft victims mentioned in the warrant are Gonzaga students- one is a member of the men’s basketball team. According to court documents, he called Spokane Police on Monday to report his Macbook Air, Xbox and a Gonzaga backpack with other items were stolen from his home in the Logan Neighborhood.
His roommate told police her purse- with wallet and credit card inside- was missing, as well.
But even as the they reported the crimes to SPD detectives, they were already a step ahead- beginning to track their stolen stuff.
A bank notified one of the victims that her card was being used at local gas stations, at a Redbox DVD rental stand and at the Shadle Walmart, where a woman tried to spend more than $500 on prepaid Visa gift cards, an energy drink and other snacks.
Walmart was then able to provide surveillance footage to detectives, who were able to find a picture of the woman who tried to use the stolen card.
Police later received a call from the other theft victim- his laptop was back online, and he was able to track it to 400 block of west Knox.
Police kept an eye on the location and, when they later knocked on the door, documents say a woman matching the surveillance photo answered.
Police obtained a warrant, and later found all the missing items inside.
Promise was arrested and charged with identity theft and possession of stolen property.
