COLFAX, Wash. — A 59-year-old Lamont man was arrested and booked into jail late Thursday night following a standoff with deputies.

Whitman County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a weapons offense call on Spuler Road around 4:30 p.m. A neighbor reported a man was firing several rounds toward a shop.

Deputies, along with Washington State Patrol troopers, arrived and found the victim’s pickup parked next to the shop with one bullet hold in the bed. It was determined the suspect, 59-year-old Phillip Hayes, had returned to his residence.

Authorities then called in the Whitman County Regional SWAT team to help take Hayes into custody. He surrendered at 11:45 p.m. after an hours-long standoff.

He was booked into the Whitman County Jail on first-degree assault and drive-by shooting charges. Hayes will be in court for his first appearance on Friday.
