Strawberry season at Walter’s Fruit Ranch off to a great start
MEAD, Wash. — The best day for strawberry picking – ever! That’s what Walter’s Fruit Ranch owner Jason Morrell said before folks filled his parking lot and raced to find the perfect picking spot, only to reiterate his sentiments.
“This is the best picking I’ve ever had and I’ve been doing it a while,” said Sally Murray, who brought along her grandkids to help her pick strawberries for her jams.
Morrell said it was the extreme heat we’ve felt over the last few days that helped so many strawberries to ripen. On Saturday, Walter’s Fruit Ranch held their first u-pick strawberry event and over 1,000 pounds of strawberries were collected in just two hours. It was the reason so many arrived before the farm was even open this morning.
Diana Moore, a 14-year old who just began summer vacation, was among the first to set down her basket alongside her mom.
“We came down as early as we could so the ripe ones wouldn’t get picked,” Moore said.
“We got up about 6:00 this morning and neither of us are morning people,” said her mother, Jodi.
Even with the large crowd, Walter’s Fruit Ranch has enough to hold a second u-pick strawberries event tomorrow, June 20. You can start picking at 8am.
