Stevens County Fire feels strain of record breaking calls

STEVENS COUNTY, Wash. — Stevens County Fire Dist. #1 has blown past a 2009 record for the number of service calls they’ve responded to.

“We’ve had a record year of runs already,” Chief Mike Bucy said. “The previous record was set in 2009 with just under 1,200 calls”

He adds they are on track to end the year near 1,400 calls.

Bucy says it’s too early to tell what’s causing the record year but attributes some of it to the bounce back in the economy.

“We’ve got more construction, and more people moving in,” Bucy said.

The higher volume in calls is making it tough on first responders. Many in the district are volunteers. Bucy does have some worry the work load may be too much for some and they may leave the department. He’s hopeful however more people will join and volunteer.

Bucy says you can really put in the amount of hours you see fit. New firefighters are sent to an academy held twice a year for training, then have other training throughout the year, which the district pays for.

“It’s a good line on a resume,” Bucy said. “A lot of employers are looking for community service it teaches a lot about leader ship, accountability and responsibility for those younger folks.”
