SPS unanimously votes to change Native American symbols and names of local schools
SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Public Schools voted unanimously on Wednesday night to change the mascots and symbols of several local schools.
SPS voted to change the mascot and symbol of the North Central High School Indians as well as the mascot of Garry Middle School, which is the Chiefs. However, the speakers hope to continue the use of the middle school’s logo of an arrowhead.
Not only that, Sheridan Elementary School will change its name. The school is named after Union General Philip Sheridan, who was known for the phrase, “The only good Indian is a dead Indian.”
According to SPS, the next step for a name change is to take suggestions from people for a new one. A screening committee will recommend three names to the School Board to select a new one for the school. As for the mascot change, they said a new mascot will be recommended to the board for approval after staff, student and community input.
