SpokAnimal opens thrift shop, hopes to raise enough money to reopen public clinic

SPOKANE, Wash. — In an effort to continue to protect and place animals in their care, SpokAnimal has opened a thrift shop at their shelter.

All the money from sales goes directly to the organization; their goal, to reopen the public veterinary clinic.

Their immediate goal, though is to get enough volunteers to make that happen.

Volunteer help is needed both in the shop and in the shelter, needed for things like dog walking, cleaning cages, laundry, and helping with adoptions.

Bernice Furukawa is a volunteer who gives 25 hours a week to the SpokAnimal. Her work is centered around Pet Smart adoptions. She says SpokAnimal usually gives her the tough-to-adopt kitties. There is no greater reward for her like when one finds their forever, loving home.

“I always say there is a home for every cat out there no matter how they are, you can find a home for them,” she said.

SpokAnimal says the newly opened thrift shop provides a unique opportunity for people to help animals who otherwise might turn down the opportunity due to things like allergies or fear of attachment. Jobs include helping to sort donations and running the store.

The thrift shop is currently open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. If they can bring on enough volunteers, they hope to change the operating hours to reflect the shelter schedule.
