Spokane Public Schools “open & on time” Tuesday

SPOKANE, Wash. — Despite about two inches of new snow overnight, Spokane Public Schools are open and on time Tuesday, according to a tweet from the district Monday night.

In the comments section of its Facebook post Tuesday morning, the district posted: “We have had people out overnight monitoring weather and road conditions all over the district in case actual was different than predicted. School will be operating on the regular schedule today.”

The final decision was made at 4:00 a.m., according to the district.

Some parents on Facebook felt Tuesday’s conditions were worse than Monday’s, when Spokane Public Schools opted for a two-hour delay.

In response to questions surrounding the decision to delay Monday but not Tuesday, the district commented “Yesterday’s decision was the result of rolling snowstorms, a warming period on Sunday that created an icy layer, and additional snow overnight. Last night’s storm did not bring as much snow as the previous storms and fell on top of roads that were cleared yesterday.”

Another comment from the district said “Student safety is the top concern. With a free and reduced lunch population of 57 percent districtwide, school is the safest and warmest place for many of our students and where they are fed breakfast and lunch.”
