Spokane County Jail adding floor-to-ceiling rails to help prevent suicide
SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane County Jail is hoping taller railings will prevent suicide among inmates.
The railings are currently about four feet tall, but once the project is finished they will go from the floor to the ceiling.
The jail told 4 News Now the project is already underway in one part of the building, and it will cost about $22,000.
A spokesperson with the jail said the hope is for the railings to be finished around February. The project comes after an inmate, 33-year-old Robert Taitch, jumped to his death from one of the railings at the Spokane County Jail in December.
