Spokane anesthesiologist found dead in backyard
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — The body of a Spokane anesthesiologist was found in a firepit in the backyard of his Dishman Hills home on Sunday.
Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies performed a welfare check at the house of 61-year-old Rex C. Porter, a retired anesthesiologist for Providence Sacred Heart, after receiving a call from a concerned neighbor.
According to the neighbor, Porter’s car had been sitting in the driveway of his home near Iller Creek Conservation Area for two days with the door open.
Deputies arrived to find the house in disarray, with broken glass on the floor and what police described as a strong odor.
A further search of the 11-acre property led deputies to find Porter’s remains in a backyard fire pit. The body parts were badly burned, according to court documents.
Deputies detained Porter’s son, 29-year-old Derek Porter, who they found in the basement of the house with what appeared to be blood on his shorts. He was not arrested.
According to a family member, Derek is autistic and non-verbal. They also said that he had a history of being violent with his father who had taken care of him alone since the death of Derek’s mother years prior.
Derek was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center to be evaluated. As of Wednesday, he was still being cared for there as he is unable to care for himself.
Detectives are still investigating and hope to analyze home surveillance footage. Investigators are still trying to figure out if a crime was committed. No one has been arrested.
