Southern China Flooding Kills 57
GUANGZHOU, China (AP) — Massive flooding across a broad stretch of southern China has killed at least 57 people and forced more than a million others from their homes, with more rain on the way.
The official Xinhua News Agency says people have been forced to flee their homes across nine provinces, including areas still reeling from the earthquake last month that killed nearly 70,000 people.
The China Meteorological Administration says heavy rain is expected to pummel the southern region over the next few days.
The official China Daily newspaper reports economic losses from the floods in one province alone have reached $1.5 billion. More than 45,000 houses have collapsed and 140,000 have been damaged.
