1977: The comedy "Slap Shot," starring Paul Newman and directed by George Roy Hill, premieres in theaters. The movie, which depicts a minor league hockey team that resorts to violent play to gain popularity in a declining factory town, received mixed reviews upon its release, but earned $28 million at the box office and has become a cult favorite.

The amount of snow outside the Charlotte Checkers’ arena had much to do with the amount of fans in the stands Wednesday night.

The minor-league hockey team, which plays in the American Hockey League and is affiliated with the Carolina Hurricanes, closed their home game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at Bojangles’ Coliseum due to six inches of snow that blanketed the city.

The inclement weather that struck much of North Carolina also caused the team to move the game time up two hours to 5 p.m. ET.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper issued a state of emergency Tuesday for all of North Carolina, urging drivers to stay off the state’s icy roads.

Playing before empty stands, the Checkers rallied with three goals in the third period to beat the Sound Tigers 4-3.
