Sign dedication to honor fallen Spokane deputy this Thursday

SPOKANE, Wash. — The first sign dedication for Spokane’s Fallen Officers Memorial Project will take place on Thursday, honoring the life of an officer who died in the line of duty.

Deputy James J. Slater died in a car crash in August 2003. He was on his way to back up an officer who was pursuing a stolen vehicle when his car hit a utility pole and flipped four times, according to the Spokane Police Department. He passed away in a local hospital.

To honor his life, as well as other fallen officers, the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Project Committee is hosting a series of sign dedications.

Thursday’s dedication will start at 10:30 a.m., at 8400 S. Grove Rd.

Slater worked with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office for two and a half years. He was survived by his wife and two daughters.
