Shining Star Senior Night: The Mt. Spokane Girls’ Track and Field team
SPOKANE, Wash. — As summer gets closer, most of the focus in sports will focus on how we move forward, but for the high school senior spring athletes, it’s going to be hard to forget about their lost season.
We want to continue honoring those careers even though we may not find out what could have been.
Mt. Spokane Head Girls’ Track and Field Coach Annette Helling couldn’t pick just one athlete to nominate for our Shining Star night. Instead, she nominated the entire team!
Marli Krantz is an amazing young woman who had her season cut short with the CORONA-19 pandemic.
She has Pole Vaulted 11′ 1″ which puts her 3rd on our All-Time list behind Courtney Bray and Jordyn Roskelley (both who went on to have amazing collegiate careers).
Marli is a state returner for us, she placed 10th last year but was hoping to place considerably higher this year.
She is going to Whitworth next year to study Sports Medicine and Pole Vault and she is a valedictorian 4.0 with many AP classes.
She’s a happy, considerate, kind person who loves to help others.
Sarah Schupp is a senior hurdler who just missed going to state last year by placing 4th at districts. She is 8th on our All-Time Top 10 list in the 300 hurdles and is going to run at Southern Virginia University next year.
Allie Lafferty is another senior who was looking forward to a successful season. She was new to track last year but earned a spot on the state 4 X 400 team that finished 11th. She ran the 800 and 400 for us all year and is going to the University of San Diego next year to run XC and Track! She never got to run XC for us as she is an avid soccer player also.
Angie Turner is an all around track senior for us. Last year she pole vaulted and ran on relays, going to state in the 4 X 400 relay. She is multi talented – a gymnast, pole vault, sprinter, cheerleader! She is attending Carroll College next year to cheer and compete in Track & Field.
Gemma Davis is a shot/discus thrower for us. She made it on our All Time Top 10 list in the Shot last year and was looking forward to bettering her performance this year. She was voted a team captain last year by her teammates and is attending BYU in Utah next year.
Emma Main is a multi talented 3-sport varsity athlete who ran sprints and did long and triple jump for us last year. She was on our 4 X 400 relay team that went to state last year and also the soccer and basketball teams that went to state. She will be attending SFCC next year to play basketball.
Jordyn Lungo is a pure sprinter for us. She is a four year letter award winner in track and has run four events in almost every meet the past three years. She has gone to state on several different relays and is a complete team player. She will be attending Gonzaga University next year majoring in biology before going into pre-veterinary studies and possibly running track as a Bulldog!
Mia McGinnity is a pole vaulter who has been steadily improving over the past three years. She placed 7th at districts last year and will be attending Whitworth University in the fall and competing in pole vault. She will be majoring in either health science or psychology.
Abby Newcomb is a javelin thrower who was knocking on the door of going to state last year placing 6th at districts. She will be playing volleyball for Whitworth next year and majoring in education and biblical studies.
Kiara Koerper-Williams is our senior high jumper. She had been steadily improving the past three years and was hoping to place higher than her 8th place finish at districts last year. She is attending Western Washington University next year, majoring in elementary education and possibly competing in track & field.
