Several car slide-offs prompt KCSO to prohibit most backcountry travel
The travel advisory affects motorized, wheeled vehicles
KOOTENAI CO., Idaho — The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office has issued a travel advisory for any residents traveling through the backcountry.
Due to several spinouts and slide-offs along ice-covered roads in the backcountry, the US Forest Service and Kootenai County Snowmobile Groomer Program have erected barricades at various trailheads, preventing access to larger vehicles.
The only vehicles able and allowed to pass through are snowmobiles and tracked ATVs and UTVs. Wheeled vehicles of any kind are prohibited.
Travel into the backcountry areas is otherwise permitted, but the Sheriff’s Office is urging caution when driving through. They say to use common sense – avoid icy and snow-covered roads, carry tire chains, shovels and communications devices, and to bring basic survival items, like food, water and warm clothing.
Most importantly, they say to let someone know if you are leaving, and when you will return.
