Proposed bill suggests naming SR 902 the ‘Gold Star Memorial Highway’
OLYMPIA, Wash. — A bipartisan bill put forward by several Eastern Washington representatives suggests naming State Route 902 the “Gold Star Memorial Highway.”
SR 902 is the primary roadway leading to the Washington State Veterans Cemetery. The bill proposes changing the name of the highway to honor those who will be taking the route to say one last goodbye to their service member.
The term “Gold Star” derives from World War I when mothers of service members who were killed came together to support one another in their grief. Over the years, the term has been expanded to include all immediate family members of lost service members, which is noted in the proposal.
“It is of the highest importance to honor the lives of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, keeping their memory alive, and recognizing the surviving families left behind who visit our Eastern Washington State Veterans Cemetery,” the proposal reads.
The bill is sponsored by Reps. Marcus Ricelli (D-Spokane), Mike Volz (R-Spokane), Jenny Graham (R-Spokane), Jake Fey (D-Tacoma), John Lovick (D-Mill Creek), Javier Valdez (D-Seattle) and Jacqueline Maycumber (R-Republic).
