Possibility of dairy milk in almond milk forces recall

More than 145,000 half-gallon cartons of Vanilla Almond Breeze almond milk have been recalled because the product may contain dairy milk.

HP Hood LLC is voluntarily recalling the product as the dairy milk is an allergen not listed on the label.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration news release, people who have an allergy or a severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening reaction if they drink the product.

The product was shipped to retailers in Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The recall only applies to the refrigerated Vanilla Almond Breeze almond milk with a use-by date of Sept. 2, 2018, the FDA release said.

It will also have a UPC barcode of 41570 05621 on the side of the carton, near the nutrition facts.

The FDA release said the product is safe to consume unless you have a milk allergy or sensitivity. There has been one report of an allergic reaction so far.
