‘Pompeii: The Immortal City’ exhibit to open Saturday at the MAC
SPOKANE, Wash. — For the last three weeks, The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture has been busy setting up its newest exhibit for you.
‘Pompeii: The Immortal City’ is a part of the current exhibit, ‘Mt. St. Helens: Critical Memory’, and gives a fascinating look at Italian history.
Mt. St. Helens was the most destructive volcano in U.S. history and the story of Pompeii gives another perspective on volcanic forces an their impact on a civilization.
If you’re unfamiliar with the story of the city of Pompeii, it was a thriving city some 2,000 years ago that was buried in ash after the destruction of Mount Vesuvius.
There’s an interactive theater where you can experience what that felt like.
This exhibit also features items like window panes and a sliced loaf of bread that were pulled from archaeological digs and are in near perfect condition.
There’s also a chance for families to feel like they’re part of the story.
“The visitor will follow the story of a family,” said the exhibit’s Project Manager Louise Schoemans. “We have five characters of a family that will also give some info of life before the catastrophe.”
This exhibit is on its second stop in the U.S. and it will only make one more before it returns to Europe.
‘Pompeii: The Immortal City’ opens Saturday, Feb. 8. at the MAC at 2316 W First Ave.
Admission ranges from $10 to $19.50 and it will be on display until May 3.
The MAC is also celebrating the opening by having Family Day where kids will have the chance to participate in projects like mosaic making after visiting the exhibit.
