Police Shoot Suicidal Man In Wenatchee

WENATCHEE, WA — Wenatchee police say a suicidal man has been shot after pointing a gun at an East Wenatchee officer.

Wenatchee Police Chief Tom Robbins says 49-year-old Michael D. Kirby was hit by a bullet above the mouth Sunday night. Kirby was listed in serious condition Monday morning at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Police from Wenatchee and neighboring East Wenatchee were dispatched after Kirby’s former wife reported that he was threatening suicide. Robbins says that when the East Wenatchee officer was about two blocks from the house, Kirby emerged with a rifle or shotgun and stepped onto the front porch.

The chief says the East Wenatchee officer opened fire when Kirby refused to drop his weapon and pointed it at the officer.

State troopers are aiding in the investigation.
