Police Say Hundreds May Be Dead In Haitian Floods

GONAIVES, Haiti (AP) — Authorities in Haiti fear that the death toll in the flooded city of Gonaives could rise into the hundreds. But they say they haven’t found that many bodies, despite some media reports that more than 500 are dead.

The Haitian government says 163 people across Haiti are confirmed dead in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Hanna.

Hurricane Ike is approaching, bringing the likelihood of more rain.

In a northern coastal town, Cap-Haitien, authorities are trying to move thousands of people into shelters ahead of Ike.

In Gonaives, meanwhile, U.N. peacekeepers and aid workers are trying to get flood and water to thousands of residents. A U.N. envoy visited a shelter where hundreds of people pushed and shoved to get water and high-energy biscuits. He says relief is trickling in, but that a lot more is needed.
