Police investigating death at northeast Spokane house

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Police are investigating a death at a home in northeast Spokane.

Authorities were called to the house near Rockwell and Pittsburg around 2:20 a.m. Thursday.

According to a release, a third party called in the incident and described suspicious activity, but did not say exactly what was happening.

“Through my bus window I saw fire starting after I just heard a huge pop or bang, basically indistinguishable from a gunshot or an engine backfiring,” said Thomas Buffington, who lives in a bus outside the home.

“Not too long after that when the fire died down, I heard another shot and then decided that was time for me to go to bed,” Buffington added.

His neighbors Matt Hargrave and Samantha Kurle thought the same thing when they heard the noise around midnight. After some more thought, they believe they were hearing gunshots.

They say they don’t know their next door neighbors well, but they’re used to seeing people coming and going.

A search warrant was obtained and executed by the SWAT team. Major Crimes detectives are also assisting with the investigation.

Police have yet to release information about who died or how they died.
