Police: Idaho man originally lied about accidental shooting

Authorities in Idaho say the 18-year-old man who accidentally shot and killed a 15-year-old boy initially told police the victim killed himself.

The Idaho Statesman reports that Meridian police say David Provencio pointed his handgun at the Tristan Fenton’s head Saturday night and pulled the trigger, not realizing it was loaded.

Ada County prosecutors said in court Monday that the older teen eventually admitted to shooting Fenton.

Police say other witnesses also said Fenton shot himself. They say several people were in a bedroom at Fenton’s house before the shooting, drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana.

Provencio is charged with involuntary manslaughter and use of a deadly weapon.

A public defender asked the judge to set his bail at $25,000, but Ada County Magistrate Henry Boomer set it at $500,000.
