Inmate who escaped from courthouse facing new charges

SPOKANE, Wash. — An inmate who escaped out of the Spokane County Courthouse is facing new charges.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said 38-year-old Alex J. Heglund was set to make an appearance in court Tuesday on two misdemeanor charges.

Deputies said he ran out of the court hearing and out of the building, but was taken into custody within 30 minutes. SCSO set up a perimeter and tracked Heglund using the Spokane Police Department’s Drone team and a K9.

K9 Jager found Heglund in the backyard of a home on W. Dean.

He was transported back to the Spokane County Jail for a new felony charge of second-degree escape. He still faces the misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and driving impaired.

This is not the first time a K9 unit has caught this inmate. In December of 2017, a K-9 unit found him fleeing in Spokane Valley.
