Police begin Camp Hope clean up at City Hall
SPOKANE, Wash. — A large police presence began cleaning up Camp Hope, a homeless encampment, at Spokane City Hall Sunday morning.
The camp was born both from need — a lack of available shelter beds led the city to temporarily suspend the sit-lie ordinance — and from a desire to raise awareness about homelessness in Spokane.
On Saturday, homeless residents of Camp Hope and community activists, including councilwoman Kate Burke, chained themselves together after receiving 48-hour notices Thursday to leave City Hall property. The notice expired at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, but protesters remained throughout the night.
Post Street was blocked off by the clean up, but is now back open.
