Person killed on railroad tracks at Kelso

A person has been struck and killed by a train in Kelso.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas (mel-OWN’-us) says the crew saw a pedestrian standing in the middle of double main line tracks at 12:35 a.m. Thursday near the train station.

The crew applied emergency brakes and blew the whistle, but the person stepped into the path of the train.

KLOG reports the body of the victim, described as an adult woman, was carried some distance under the train.

Melonas says it was the ninth fatality on BNSF tracks this year in Washington. Last year there were 20 fatalities.
