Panama falls to Belgium in country’s World Cup debut
After a scoreless first half, Belgium opened up the match to beat World Cup debutants Panama 3-0 on Monday.
Dries Mertens opened the scoring at the 47th minute and Romelu Lukaku added two goals six minutes apart later in the half.
The victory at Fisht Stadium in Sochi puts Belgium at the top of the Group G, with England right behind them after their 2-1 victory over Tunisia to cap off the day’s matches.
Sweden started off the day with a 1-0 victory over South Korea in a Group F match. The victory moves the Swedes into a tie atop the group standings with Mexico, which upset defending champions Germany 1-0 on Sunday.
