Pakistani Prime Minister Escapes Attempt On Life
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Pakistani officials say snipers fired on the prime minister’s motorcade as it drove to the airport to pick him up.
Bullets struck his car window at least twice, but neither the prime minister nor his staff were inside. The assassination attempt comes as Pakistan’s new civilian government cracks down on Islamist militants after ousting U.S. ally Pervez Musharraf from the presidency.
Television footage shows the prime minister’s black Mercedes parked at his office in Islamabad with two impact points clearly visible on the driver’s window. The glass was cracked but intact.
Last week a car with a U.S. diplomat inside was shot at in Pakistan’s troubled northwest. No one was hurt in that incident.
