Oregon governor candidates prepare for last debate

Gov. John Kitzhaber and state Rep. Dennis Richardson are preparing to meet in their final debate a day election workers begin dropping ballots in the mail.

The debate on Tuesday is sponsored by KGW-TV and The Oregonian.

It comes amid scrutiny of first lady Cylvia Hayes’ consulting work.

Richardson, a Republican from southern Oregon, has called for an investigation into whether Hayes broke any laws when she did work for organizations seeking to influence state policy. Kitzhaber maintains she did not, but has asked a commission whether state ethics laws apply to her.

The Democratic incumbent is the front runner in his bid for an unprecedented fourth term.
