One Dead, 16 Missing After Helicopter Crash
ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland (AP) — Officials say at least one person is dead and 16 more missing after a helicopter crashed in the freezing Atlantic Ocean.
Rescuers have pulled one survivor from the frigid waters off Newfoundland, Canada.
Major Denis McGuire of the Rescue Coordination Center says searchers have picked up signals from survival suits equipped with water-activiated locator beacons. But, he says there’s still no sign of the missing.
The survivor, Robert Decker, was flown to St. John’s hospital. He’s listed in critical but stable condition.
A Canadian transportation official says the helicopter reported mechanical problems, but it’s not clear what they were. It was headed to Hibernia oil platforms, about 200 miles east of St. John’s.
