Olynyk named AP, John Wooden All-American

Gonzaga University junior center Kelly Olynyk picked up his second major award of the day Monday when he was among the 10 players selected to the John R. Wooden All-American team.

Earlier in the day Olynyk was named to the Associated Press All-America first team.

Trey Burke of Final Four-bound University of Michigan and Indiana University teammates Victor Oladipo and Cody Zeller were among the honorees.

They were joined by Doug McDermott of Creighton University, the only repeat honoree from last year; Shane Larkin of the University of Miami; Ben McLemore of the University of Kansas; Mason Plumlee of Duke University; Otto Porter Jr. of Georgetown University; and Deshaun Thomas of Ohio State University. .Oladipo and Zeller are the first teammates to be honored in the same year since 2010, when DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall of the University of Kentucky were on the team.

Olynyk is the fifth Bulldog to receive John R. Wooden Top 10 status, joining Casey Calvary in 2001, Dan Dickau in 2002, Blake Stepp in 2004 and Adam Morrison in 2006. Dickau and Morrison were named to the Top Five Award.

The Wooden Award for the college basketball player of the year will be announced this weekend at the Final Four in Atlanta. The winner will be honored at the Los Angeles Athletic Club on April 12.

The Wooden team is chosen by media covering college basketball. The voting deadline came after the first three rounds of the NCAA tournament.
