Off-Duty Deputy Recovering From Gunshot

SOAP LAKE, WA — An off-duty Grant County Sheriff’s Deputy was in the hospital Thursday night recovering from a gunshot wound.

Investigators say Deputy Earl Romeg was out hunting in a rural area West of Soap Lake. He saw some other hunters in the area, and decided to leave. As he was heading to his car he heard a gunshot and then felt himself get hit.

He fired a shot in the air to call for help. A nearby hiker heard that shot and called 911.

The Washington State Patrol has taken over the investigation, and is looking for the shooter. He’s described as an older white male with white hair who was seen driving a white Ford extended cab pickup.

The deputy was shot in the lower back. He has been taken to Samaritan hospital for surgery. His status was unknown early Friday morning.
