North Idaho County Faces Budget Cuts
COEUR D’ALENE — Commissioners in northern Idaho’s Shoshone County say they have to cut 21 percent of the county’s budget because of the loss of federal money intended to make up for reduced timber sales.
Commissioner Vince Rinaldi says the county has to cut about $2.6 million from its $12 million budget.
Congress this year did not renew the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act that has made payments to rural counties hurt by cutbacks in federal logging.
Most of the money went to six Western states — Oregon, California, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.
