New Thomas Hammer location to open in North Spokane

A new Thomas Hammer location will soon open its doors to residents and visitors of North Spokane.

Thomas Hammer Coffee Roasting Company Inc. has agreed to lease 1,000 square feet in North Spokane’s Fairwood Business District at 319 W Hastings. The space was formerly occupied by Rocket Bakery Co. Once open, this will be Hammer’s 18th location.

Rocket’s lease expired July 31 and the Hammer’s lease began August 1. The coffee shop is currently closed for remodeling, which is expected to take six to eight weeks. The leased space is one and a half blocks west of Mead High School, and includes a drive-up window. Hammer has two other drive-thru locations in Post Falls and Hayden Lake, Idaho.

Hammer’s announcement is part of a gradual redevelopment in the former Fairwood Shopping Center. The center was once home to an entire neighborhood shopping complex anchored by an Albertson’s supermarket. Albertson’s later relocated about a mile west to the northwest corner of Hastings and Division. More recently, three fitness companies, a yoga studio, a driving school, a lingerie party store, a cocktail lounge other small businesses have sprung up in and around the reinvigorated Fairwood Business District.

“I especially like the passion Rob Allen possesses in re-purposing this existing shopping center with a mix of small local businesses just like ourselves,” Thomas Hammer said. “Not only do they serve the community but also dollar by dollar engage the economy and we are proud to join the effort. Our customers have also requested for years a North Side location and we felt this location was a perfect fit We like to think we were local before local was cool.”

“Thomas Hammer grew up in North Spokane. He gets the neighborhood aspect of what we’re trying to do here,” said Allen. “Even before the new store is open, the coffee roasting company is donating servings of its popular cold brew for neighbors attending the weekly Fairwood Market.”

Thomas Hammer Coffee Roasting Company Inc. was founded on December 3, 1993 by Thomas Hammer who started roasting and serving coffee in Northtown after stints as a barista at Nordstrom’s downtown. Later, he worked as espresso bar manager for Four Seasons Coffee Company.
