More kids in Washington are getting COVID, going to the hospital
OLYMPIA, Wash – COVID cases are rising in Washington in kids from birth to age 19, according to new data released Wednesday by the Washington Department of Health.
DOH says between April 17th and May 1st, 5,249 cases were reported in that age group.
That’s likely an underrepresentation of the true number, since many people are using at-home tests now and not reporting results to the county or state.
The highest case rate is in kids between 11 and 13 years old.
Forty-one kids between birth and 19 were hospitalized with COVID. That’s an increase, but still represents just 2.2 hospitalizations per 100,000.
Sixteen kids have died from COVID between January 1, 2021 and May 1, 2022.
The highest case rates were in ESD 121, which is in the Renton area of Western Washington. 403 kids per 100,000 population reported testing positive between April 17th and May 1st.
ESD 101, which includes Spokane and most of Eastern Washington, had 168 kids testing positive for a case rate of 99.7.
While the case rate is going up, it’s still nowhere near the rate seen in January and February of this year when the omicron variant was spreading rapidly across the country.
